Abstract

The present article aims to analyze the impacts on combating slavery in Brazil,
starting from the analysis of the José Pereira case, considered the primary Brazilian case of
slavery in modern times. From this standpoint, the entire history of the case will be examined,
encompassing significant moments in the life of the former slave, José Pereira, to the
understanding of organizations combating labor exploitation both within Brazil and globally.
Finally, it will elucidate the principal legislative interventions stemming from the resolution
of the case, in addition to the necessity of creating new anti-slavery laws, including more
severe punishments for criminals.
