Abstract

The article addresses the challenges faced by Haitian children in adapting to the educational system of Sorocaba and the actions taken by schools to promote inclusion. The research was motivated by the significant increase in Haitian immigration to the city, driven by new policies that have facilitated family reunification. Sorocaba is now home to approximately 500 Haitian families, making it urgent to understand how schools have been receiving these children and how they have integrated into the school environment. To achieve the research objectives, a qualitative approach was adopted, combining a literature review, a case study in a public school, and interviews with teachers. In addition, data on the increasing enrollment of Haitian children in recent years were analyzed, highlighting how this new reality has challenged and transformed educational practices within institutions. The results show that, despite initial difficulties, Haitian children have adapted well, especially in learning Portuguese and interacting with Brazilian culture. On the other hand, families still face language barriers, which hinder communication with schools. To minimize this problem, some strategies have been implemented, such as translating school communications into French and providing support from the Secretariat of Citizenship. These initiatives have been helpful, but there is still a need for more structured actions and public policies to ensure broader and more consistent inclusion.
