Abstract

A study on the experiences of trans women in the Brazilian prison system is
essential to understand the complexities faced by this marginalized group. This
investigation is socially relevant as it seeks to give visibility to a historically silenced
group and provides a deep understanding of the barriers in the prison environment. The
lack of specific studies on trans women in Brazilian prisons makes the research vital,
contributing to the academic understanding of gender dynamics in the prison system and
guiding more inclusive and effective public policies that respect human rights and the
dignity of these individuals. The methodology includes a video that highlights the
difficulties faced by trans people in the Brazilian prison system, emphasizing the
segregation in male detention, the violation of rights, and the lack of access to transition.
The transphobia perpetuated by prison guards is a central issue. Other sources, such as
reports and articles, reinforce the violence and difficulties faced by trans women, pointing
out the lack of prison system structure and the need to protect the rights of this population.
Interviews with figures like the transsexual lawyer Raica Souza illustrate the
discrimination in the prison system, despite measures like Resolution No. 11 of 2014 and
Supreme Court rulings. Challenges include access to medications and specific treatments,
highlighting the need to ensure health rights and specialized legal assistance. The
documentary "Close" presents the reality of trans women in prisons, highlighting
privileges, challenges, and the pursuit of aesthetic procedures even under adverse
conditions. The research results indicate the urgency of policies that ensure security,
respect, and access to treatments for trans people in the prison system, combating
prejudice and promoting an inclusive environment. Awareness, education, and civil
society participation are crucial to building a fairer and more respectful society regarding
gender identity diversity.
