Abstract

The internationalization process of small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs) has captured the attention of researchers worldwide. The factors influencing
behavior during this process have sparked the interest of researchers employing various
theoretical approaches to contribute to the development of international business studies.
This article seeks to provide an overview of the various theories that have been used to
investigate the internationalization process of SMEs. To conduct this review, 100 journal
articles published between 2018 and 2023 were analyzed. Based on the findings, of the
17 theories, the five primary published theories, in order, are (1) Uppsala Theory, (2)
Network Theory, (3) Resource-Based Theory, (4) International Entrepreneurship Theory,
and (5) Institutional Theory. This study also offers suggestions and implications for future
research
